Program Volunteers

Program volunteers train to assist our clients and staff as side-walkers. Side-walkers walk next to the side of the horse and are responsible for providing support and stabilization to our clients who need assistance, as well as ensuring the safety of the client. New program volunteers must complete a mandatory training and be at least 14 years of age. The next training day is scheduled for TBD 2020. NEW VOLUNTEERS MUST REGISTER AND CONFIRM SCHEDULE BEFORE ATTENDING. These trainings are typically scheduled 3 times per year. Side-walker training is a prerequisite for horse handlers and leaders.

Our sessions run in the spring and fall for 8-12 consecutive weeks, and in July for a 4 week summer session. Please note there will be limited opportunities for program volunteers in 2020 due to the relocation of our facility. We serve clients on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. As a volunteer during a session, we ask that you commit to side-walking for all 8-12 weeks of a session (4 weeks during summer), as consistency is important for our clients. If a side-walker cannot make their scheduled time, we ask for as much notice as possible in order to find a sub for that client. If we have more side-walkers than we need for a treatment or lesson, we would ask for your help in other areas around the facility, i.e. picking up manure/sticks, etc.

Groups, Grounds & Facility

Volunteers may come individually or as a group (business, school, churches, boy/girl scout troops etc.) and perform age and skill appropriate tasks that may include grounds maintenance (raking, washing fences, picking up sticks), cleaning stalls or tack, painting, repairs or administrative jobs like filling envelopes or typing. Each year, we schedule several work days in order to keep our facility clean and maintained. Up to 50-70 volunteers may be accommodated for work days. Our next Work Days are scheduled for TBD 2020. Please complete a volunteer form if you'd like to help. (Special arrangements or service days may be set up for your group.)

Events & Other Interests

We have a variety of unique fundraisers throughout the year that require energized, creative volunteers or require help with various needs of planning, executing or working the event. Our upcoming events is Nag's Head Trivia on Saturday, April 18th, 2020 at CBC High School. Opportunities may include set-up/clean-up, registration, bartenders, merchandise, table attendants, raffle sales, judges/scorekeepers, silent auction attendants, auction basket makers, and more.
